SOUTH AFRICA

Note: "Archives of government offices and local authorities are transferred to archive depots after a period of 30 years, and are accessible to the public and the office of origin. The archives of the Central Government are preserved in the Central Archives in Pretoria, whilst provincial depots in Pretoria, Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg and Bloemfontein keep the archives from the colonial period as well as the relevant provincial archives. The country's oldest archives are in the custody of the Cape Archives Depot." --South Africa Yearbook, 1994 (p. 104).
